In my field-based urban courses I will typically begin the first class by inviting students to write down three words that describe their perception of the place.  These are then used to generate word clouds in which the display of the given words is a function of their frequency count.  More frequent words are more prominently displayed.

Below are word clouds for courses offered in downtown Kitchener between 2009 and 2015.  The contrast between class perceptions in 2009 and 2015 are strikingly different.
